An overseas quilt-versus-comforter comparison may describe patchwork quilts, while an Australian shop uses “quilt” for doona inserts. Neither name alone tells you the fill, thickness or warmth.

Choose the arrangement you prefer

Insert and removable cover

This arrangement lets you change the outer fabric or design while keeping the insert. Match the finished dimensions of both pieces and check each care label separately. A patterned cover is the outer layer you see; the filled insert underneath is a different product.

A comforter

Check whether the finished outer surface is intended to be used on its own and how the whole item is cleaned. Do not assume every comforter is heavier or warmer than every quilt.

A coverlet or bedspread

For warmer nights, look beyond the name

Compare filling, construction and weight rather than choosing by the word quilt or comforter. Your room, other bedding layers and preferred feel also matter. A lightweight insert and a heavily filled insert can both be called quilts.

The cover’s fibre and construction affect its surface feel, but a cotton cover does not establish the warmth of the filled layer underneath. Check the two pieces separately.

1. Measure the mattress and decide on the coverage you prefer.
2. For an insert and cover, compare the actual width and length of both.
3. Check whether pillowcases or other accessories are included.
4. Read the washing and drying instructions for each item.
