Placemats

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What size and shape placemats do I need for my dining table?

Most rectangular placemats sit around 33 x 45 cm, large enough to fit a dinner plate, side plate and cutlery without overlapping the next setting. For a round table, round or oval placemats (35–45 cm wide) work better than rectangles, which leave awkward gaps. Allow at least 10 cm between mats. Our table setting tips guide covers spacing and proportion for both shapes.

What colour placemats suit a wooden, marble or black table?

On warm timber tables (oak, walnut, dark wood), neutral and earthy tones, natural linen, taupe, moss, mustard or cream, keep the timber on display. On white marble, jewel tones like ruby, indigo, charcoal and gold create contrast. On dark or black tables, lighter mats (cream, rose, gold, mustard) lift the setting. To layer further, pair with a complementary table runner in a matching tone.

How do I set a table with placemats and a table runner?

Run the table runner down the centre of the table first, then place each placemat across the runner with about a third of the placemat sitting on top of the runner and two-thirds extending outward. The placemat anchors each diner's setting; the runner ties the centre together with a colour or texture story. Our guide to choosing the right table runner walks through sizing and styling.

What's the best placemat material to protect a wood dining table?

For solid protection of timber, look for placemats with a structured base, bamboo and woven natural fibres resist heat, absorb minor spills and stop plates scratching the wood. Fabric placemats look softer but offer less protection against hot dishes and wet glasses. For everyday use on a wood table, our Amata Bamboo Runner and Placemat set gives you matching pieces with heat-resistant backing.

What's the difference between fabric and bamboo placemats?

Fabric placemats (cotton, linen, canvas) sit flat against the table and add colour, pattern or softness, best suited to formal or styled settings. Bamboo placemats have structure and bring natural texture, work well in casual or rustic dining rooms, and clean up faster after spills. Most homes use both depending on the occasion. For more on coordinating textile choices, see our guide to table linens.

How do I clean and care for placemats?

For fabric placemats, shake off crumbs after each meal, then machine-wash on a cool to warm cycle inside a wash bag for cotton and linen. Spot-clean stains with a mild detergent before they set. Iron on the reverse side while slightly damp. Bamboo placemats only need a wipe-down with a damp cloth, never soak them, as water can warp the slats. Store both flat or rolled to prevent creasing.
