Make the bed in five steps

Fit the bottom sheet
Match the sheet to the mattress width, length and total height, including any topper. Seat each corner and smooth the surface without overstretching it. If it keeps coming off, check the fit rather than pulling it ever tighter.

Add a flat sheet if you use one
Centre it over the bed with enough length to tuck at the foot. If there is a decorative top edge, position it so the finish shows when folded back. You can leave the sides loose for comfort or tuck them for a neater appearance.
For a hospital corner, tuck the foot edge, lift the loose side fabric to form a diagonal fold, tuck the lower fabric, then lower the fold and tuck it if desired. Leave the amount of room you prefer for your feet.

Add the quilt or other top layer
Use a quilt insert and cover with matching measurements. Distribute the insert evenly and align the corners. Fold back the top edge to show the layers underneath. Some hotels use layered flat sheets; at home, a removable quilt cover is another practical choice.

Arrange pillows
Put sleeping pillows at the back, then add a small number of decorative pillows if you like. Match each case to its pillow and keep the arrangement easy to remove at bedtime. More pillows are a styling choice, not a requirement for comfort.

Finish simply
Smooth the surface and add a folded throw or coverlet at the foot if it suits your room. Keep the palette coordinated so the bed looks considered without needing many accessories.

A crisp woven sheet, a smooth sateen finish and a relaxed knit create different looks. Compare the actual fabric rather than assuming all hotels use one fibre or thread count. Higher thread count alone does not establish softness, cooling or durability.

Get the Australian sizing right first
Keep mattress measurements separate from quilt measurements. Fitted sheets need the correct mattress footprint and total depth. Quilt covers need to match the insert, even when you choose a larger quilt for more drape.
For example, the Manchester Collection quilt reference lists Queen at 210 × 210 cm and King at 245 × 210 cm. Moving from Queen to King adds 35 cm of width while the length stays the same. Choose by the coverage you want, then check the actual product dimensions.

Keep the finish practical
Follow the care label for washing, drying and ironing. Iron or steam only where permitted. Fully dry bedding before making the bed and keep the room ventilated where practical.
Fragrance is optional. A freshly laundered, well-aired bed does not need scented sprays; use only products suitable for the fabric and your preferences.

What thread count do hotels use?
Hotels use different bedding. At home, compare the actual fibre, weave, finish, fit and care rather than treating one thread count as a universal hotel standard.
Do I need a flat sheet?

How many pillows should I use?
