Table Runners

Table runners are the quickest way to dress a dining table — they add length, colour and texture without covering the whole surface. Perfect for everyday dining, seasonal styling or entertaining.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is a table runner, and what's it used for?

A table runner is a long, narrow strip of fabric that sits down the centre of a dining or coffee table, typically 30–45 cm wide and longer than the table itself. It dresses the table without covering the whole surface, adds colour and texture, and can be used everyday, seasonally, or to anchor a centrepiece. Our guide to choosing the right table runner explains the styling basics.

How long and how wide should a table runner be?

A table runner should be 30–45 cm wide and run longer than the table itself. As a guide, allow the runner to drop 15–30 cm over each end of the table, so a 180 cm dining table works best with a 210–240 cm runner. Shorter 150 cm runners suit small dining tables, kitchen tables or coffee tables. Our Milan Slate runner measures 35 x 150 cm.

What fabric or material is best for a table runner?

Cotton is the most versatile choice: soft, washable, and available in plain, woven and patterned styles. Polyester resists creasing and stains, useful for runners that get heavy weekly use. Bamboo brings natural texture and structure, protects timber from heat and works well in casual settings. For a structured bamboo option with a matching placemat, see our Talon Bamboo Runner and Placemat set.

How do I style a table runner with placemats?

Lay the runner down the centre first. Place each placemat across the runner so a third of the placemat sits on top of the runner and two-thirds extends outward toward each diner. Keep one piece neutral and let the other carry the colour, usually the runner takes the colour while placemats stay quiet. Browse our placemat range for coordinating fabric and bamboo options.

What colour table runner suits a wood, marble or white table?

On warm timber tables, mushroom, taupe, cream and atmosphere blend with the wood grain while still adding texture. White marble or painted tables take stronger colours well - burnt orange, mustard, ruby, indigo and forest green stand out without competing. Dark tables come alive with lighter runners like cream, mushroom and rose. A Milan Mushroom runner is a safe neutral that works on most table tones.

How do I wash and store a table runner?

For cotton runners, machine-wash on a cool to warm cycle inside a wash bag, then iron on the reverse side while slightly damp. Polyester washes the same way at lower temperatures. Bamboo runners only need a wipe-down with a damp cloth, don't soak them. Store runners rolled rather than folded to prevent creases - a paper towel tube or wrapping tube works well.
