FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is a tea towel, and what's it used for?

A tea towel is a lightweight cotton or linen kitchen cloth, typically 45 x 70 cm to 50 x 80 cm, used for drying dishes, glassware and hands, covering rising bread or salads, lining a bread basket, or wrapping fresh herbs to keep them crisp. The name dates from 18th-century England when they were used to dry fine china. See our guide to table linens for how they fit into the wider category.

What's the best fabric for tea towels?

100% cotton is the everyday standard: soft, absorbent, easy to wash and quick-drying. Linen-blend tea towels feel slightly crisper and soften with every wash, with better lint-free drying for glassware. Cotton-linen blends like our Mila Tea Towel in Linen bridge both, absorbent enough for daily use, but smooth enough to polish glasses without leaving fibre. Avoid synthetics like polyester for drying, they smear rather than absorb.

How do I make new tea towels more absorbent?

New cotton tea towels often feel stiff and slick because of manufacturing finishes that block absorption. Wash them once or twice before first use on a warm cycle with a cup of white vinegar (no detergent) to strip the coating, then run a normal wash with detergent. Avoid fabric softener, it leaves a residue that reduces absorbency. Our Light Mushroom Tea Towel hits full absorbency after one or two washes.

How do I wash, whiten and remove stains from tea towels?

Wash tea towels at 60°C on a regular cotton cycle - hotter than other laundry, because they collect grease and food bacteria. Treat stains before washing: bicarb soda and lemon juice lift coffee and tea stains; warm dish soap shifts grease; a soak in oxygen-based stain remover whitens dingy whites. Avoid softener, it reduces absorbency. Our washing guide for towels covers detergent and drying tips that apply here.

How often should I replace tea towels, and how many do I need?

A working household needs around 6 to 10 tea towels, enough to dry dishes after meals while others are in the wash. Replace tea towels every 12 to 18 months, or sooner if they stay smelly after washing, fray at the edges or stop drying well. Keep older towels as cleaning rags. For everyday kitchen use, our Grey Luxurious Tea Towel is a neutral starting point.

What colour tea towel suits my kitchen?

For white, marble or Scandi-style kitchens, soft neutrals like linen, mushroom, grey or pink read clean and considered. Dark or moody kitchens carry stronger tones: forest green, navy, black and orange add warmth without disappearing. Coloured tea towels also show stains less than pure white. For a softer accent in a neutral kitchen, our Mila Tea Towel in Pink is a subtle pop of colour that still feels grown-up.
