FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What cushion styles does Manchester Collection offer?

The range covers four main formats: square velvet cushions in a broad colour palette; oblong (breakfast) cushions for front-of-bed layering; boucle cushions in a looped, textured fabric; and beaded cushions with hand-stitched bead detailing. European square pillowcases in velvet and boucle are also available separately. For an overview of how different fabric textures work together in a room scheme, our guide to unique bedding fabrics and textures covers the options.

What sizes do decorative cushions come in?

Standard square cushions come in a range of sizes, 45 × 45 cm is the most common everyday size, 55 × 55 cm suits larger sofas and beds, and 60 × 60 cm works for oversized statement cushions. Oblong cushions are typically around 30 × 50 cm or 35 × 55 cm. Matching cushion size to the scale of your sofa or bed avoids the look of undersized scatter cushions. Our bedroom cushion guide covers sizing and arrangement tips.

What's the difference between a square cushion and an oblong cushion?

Square cushions (45–60 × 45–60 cm) are the standard format used across beds, sofas, and chairs as the main decorative layer. Oblong cushions are narrower and longer, typically around 30 × 50 cm, and designed to sit in front of square cushions as an accent piece. Oblongs add variety to a cushion arrangement without adding bulk. On a bed, the most common approach is squares at the back with one or two oblongs placed in front to finish the look.

How many cushions should I use to dress a bed?

The classic approach for a queen or king bed: two European square cushions at the back, two standard sleeping pillowcases in front of those, then one or two oblongs at the front. This creates depth and layers without looking cluttered. A double bed typically needs fewer, one European square or two standard cushions is usually enough. The goal is a structured look that's easy to remove at night. Our bedroom styling guide shows how the layers work together.

What is crushed velvet, and how does it differ from regular velvet?

Crushed velvet has a pile that is twisted or pressed in different directions during finishing, creating a shimmering, multi-directional sheen. Regular velvet has a uniform, flat pile that reflects light evenly. Crushed velvet looks more textural and catches the light more dramatically, while regular velvet has a smoother, more structured appearance. Both are used decoratively in cushions, the velvet square cushion range shows the regular velvet style in practice.

Do Manchester Collection cushions come with inserts, or are they covers only?

Most cushions in the Manchester Collection range are sold as complete, filled cushions, the insert is included. This applies to velvet, boucle, and beaded square and oblong cushions. European pillowcases in velvet and boucle are cases only, designed to fit a 65 × 65 cm European pillow insert purchased separately. Check each product listing to confirm, the product title will state it clearly. The boucle square cushion is an example of a complete filled cushion.
